Tablets Take Training to New Heights
Why Tablet Devices Will Revolutionize eLearning

Mobile Learning

In the past few years mLearning has gone mainstream. Smart phones, iPods, and eBooks have opened up opportunities for anytime, anywhere access to online training and education. But when Apple launched a new tablet computing craze by releasing the iPad in 2010, there was a sense that these devices were different.

With 17 million tablets sold in 2010 and another 44 million forecast to be shipped in 2011, according to market research firm IDC, eLearning content and product providers are exploring how to best reach learners using the devices. Tablets offer most of the functionality and mobility advantages of smart phones, but also have sufficient screen size and processing power to replace desktop or laptop computers in many situations.

The combination of mobility, larger screen size, and greater computing power makes tablets an ideal mobile device for accessing a wide range of training and educational content—from e-textbooks to Web-based courses to decision-support apps. Producers of eLearning who understand the devices’ potential—and limitations—can create truly innovative, effective tablet-based learning experiences that wow and delight learners.

Iowa ABD Launches Online Tobacco Retailer Course

To reduce tobacco sales to minors across Iowa, the state's Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD) has long offered a classroom-based vendor training program that teaches retailers how to deny youth access to tobacco products. In 2010, the Iowa ABD decided to move this compliance training program online, improving access and consistency while reducing costs.

The ABD turned to Monarch Media to develop a self-service eLearning version of the training. The course is delivered via a hosted learning management system (LMS) that also provides program administration and a searchable database of vendors and their employees who have successfully completed the course.

Dos and Don'ts for Leading eLearning Projects

Leading eLearning course and product development is complex. It requires coordination of subject matter experts, instructional designers, usability experts, and software developers as they strive to accomplish a large number of tasks.

Failure to understand and implement a production process can have serious repercussions for your eLearning project. Without clear communications, in-house teams and external content experts and vendors may work at cross-purposes. Costs can escalate and deadlines slip if a delayed deliverable has a cascading effect across the project plan.

Our team of project leaders has put together a list of dos and don'ts that can lead to a successful eLearning process.
