Hand Washing

When to Wash & When to Sanitize

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between washing your hands with soap and water versus cleaning them with hand sanitizer?

Did You Know?

Hand Washing vs. Hand Sanitizing

Washing with soap and water and cleaning with hand sanitizer are equally effective in most cases.

When is hand washing best?

It is recommended to wash your hands with soap and water in the following situations:

  • If your hands are visibly dirty
  • After using the restroom
  • If you visit or take care of a patient who is on “Contact Plus Isolation” in the hospital

Hand sanitizer can be a foam or gel and must contain at least 60% alcohol to be considered effective. It kills germs quickly so there is no chance for the germs to adapt or develop resistance.
