Hand Washing Rules in the Hospital

Doctor washing hands

Hand washing is especially important in the hospital and other medical facilities—like doctor’s clinics—where there are sick people.

Here are basic rules for hand washing in the hospital.

  • Medical staff and families are required to perform hand hygiene before going into a patient’s room or space AND when leaving. In this case either hand sanitizer or soap and water can be used to perform hand hygiene. Tip: Create a habit of “Gel In and Gel Out.”

  • At Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital there are different isolation signs on patient doors. These isolation signs tell you if you need to wear a gown, mask, and/or gloves before entering a room.

These precautions are critical. They protect you, your child, and everyone in the hospital. All people, including staff, families, and patients, must follow the isolation rules.

If you see above icon on the sign you must wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the room. Hand sanitizer is NOT permitted after touching the patient.
